How to replace audi key an audi key copy G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine, there are no sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store. Test them out to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, replacement key for audi a4 example. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly if you're looking at a Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues within your vehicle. It's a crucial component of the transmission of your audi a1 key fob, as it transmits information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between those points. This is the same across the audi replacement keys 80-100-200-RS2 model, ranging from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find them in wrecking yards.
